A new filler, blending vessel, or processing skid can be ready for delivery while the piping scope is still unsettled. Which existing lines will be opened? Who approves the cleaning sequence? When does the installation crew hand the system back to production? For food and beverage facilities, these questions belong in the project plan before an outage is booked.

Sanitary piping tie-ins connect new equipment to an existing process. The physical connection is only one part of the work. A useful scope also defines the product-contact boundaries, field measurements, inspection records, cleaning responsibilities, and conditions for restarting the line.

Start with a connection schedule

Give every proposed tie-in a unique reference on the current drawings. Record what the line carries, where the connection is located, and which equipment depends on it. Distinguish product piping from cleaning circuits and plant utilities so everyone reviews the correct requirements.

The connection schedule should identify information that still needs confirmation. An old drawing may show the intended arrangement without capturing later field changes. Photos help explain access, but they do not replace verified dimensions or an approved piping specification.

  • Existing and new connection locations, sizes, and orientations.
  • Product and cleaning conditions supplied by the facility.
  • Approved tubing, fittings, seals, and joining requirements.
  • Access restrictions and nearby operating production areas.
  • The person responsible for approving each unresolved detail.

Review the cleaning circuit with the process team

Adding piping changes the system that must be cleaned. Include the facility’s quality team and process specialists in the review, along with the equipment supplier. Ask how the addition affects the existing cleaning route, return path, instrumentation, and operating sequence.

Alfa Laval’s CIP station overview illustrates that cleaning conditions are selected for the target installation, including time, temperature, pressure, and flow. Those conditions should come from the approved process and equipment requirements; they should not be assumed from a similar project.

Before fabrication, establish who reviews cleanability and who accepts the updated cleaning procedure. A completed installation does not, by itself, demonstrate that a modified process is ready to produce food.

Decide what can be prefabricated

Pipe prefabrication can move some assembly work away from the production area. Its usefulness depends on having reliable dimensions and a clear division between shop work and final field connections.

During the walkdown, check whether a completed assembly can pass through the available doors and reach its final position. Confirm handling arrangements and how finished components will be protected before installation. Identify any measurements that can only be taken after existing equipment is removed, and keep those pieces out of the early fabrication release.

Build the outage around approval points

Rather than allocating the entire outage to installation, show the sequence from production handover through inspection and cleaning to restart authorization. Name the responsible party for each transition. The facility’s approved isolation and work-control procedures should govern when equipment and piping are made available to contractors.

Include time for field discrepancies. If an existing connection does not match the drawing, the team needs an identified decision-maker and a way to approve the change. Record the latest point at which a delay would affect the planned restart, and agree on the escalation process before work begins.

Specify the turnover package before requesting a quote

List the records the facility needs at completion. Depending on the project, these may include revised drawings, material records, weld documentation, inspection results, and testing records. Define the required format and reviewer in the bid package so documentation is part of the scope.
