Alabama Pellet Plant Project Generates Quality Jobs and Boosts Timber Markets
Enviva Inc., a sustainability-focused company based in Bethesda, Maryland, recently achieved a significant milestone by commencing construction on a wood pellet plant in Sumter County. A ceremony was held at the Epes site, where the state-of-the-art production facility for sustainable and renewable energy sources is being built. Governor Kay Ivey, along with Enviva executives and community leaders, attended the groundbreaking event, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on West Alabama.
Thomas Meth, President and CEO of Enviva, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to break ground on a state-of-the-art wood pellet production facility in West Alabama alongside Governor Ivey and local officials. He emphasized Enviva’s commitment to long-term green job creation and investment in Alabama. Meth also acknowledged the overwhelming support received from the local community and expressed the company’s desire to be a valued member of the community for years to come.
Enviva's Expansion Spurs Growth and Opportunity in West Alabama
Governor Ivey expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Make no mistake about it, this is a very big day for West Alabama. Enviva’s commitment here at the Port of Epes will breathe new life into this community and region as a whole.” The completion of the plant is projected to create around 350 direct and indirect jobs, benefiting industries such as logging and trucking.
Enviva specializes in producing industrial wood pellets that serve as a low-carbon, renewable power generation source, primarily for markets in Europe and Asia. The Alabama plant will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions. Enviva first announced its plans for the facility in October 2019 and has been diligently working to advance the project. The company anticipates investing an average of $375 million in its next-generation pellet plants, including the one in Epes.
Enviva purchased over 300 acres of land in Sumter County along the Tombigbee River in 2020, where a former wood products company’s manufacturing site was located. The closure of the facility resulted in job losses and had a negative impact on the local economy.
Construction for Enviva’s Epes plant began in July 2022. The plant is expected to have a capacity of 1.1 million metric tons per year and is scheduled to be operational by mid-2024, with full production anticipated in 2025.
Enviva currently operates 10 pellet plants in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi, with a total production capacity of approximately 6.2 million metric tons per year. The Epes plant will be the company’s 11th production facility, and they are also planning a 12th facility near Bond, Mississippi.
U.S. Representative Terri Sewell expressed her enthusiasm for Enviva’s investment project, recognizing its positive impact on Sumter County. She emphasized the importance of delivering resources and opportunities to the people in need, particularly in rural communities, and commended Enviva for providing additional jobs through this expansion
