Inspect penetrations and transitions carefully; those details are often where moisture and heat loss become more likely.
Not every exposed line requires the same treatment. The appropriate repair or protection depends on the service, materials, process requirements, plant standards, and project-specific conditions. Check drains, low points, vents, and isolation valves
A line that cannot be drained, vented, or isolated as planned is harder to protect and harder to repair during a production interruption. Identify low points where liquid may collect, then confirm that drains, valves, and access points are present, operable, and reachable. Review high points and vents as well, particularly where air removal or controlled filling is part of normal operation.
For each vulnerable section, ask practical questions:
- Can the line be isolated without affecting another critical process?
- Are drains and vents accessible, identified, and suitable for the operating procedure?
- Do valves show signs of leakage, corrosion, damaged handles, or restricted access?
- Are there dead legs, unused branches, or temporary connections that should be evaluated?
- Is there a defined plan for lines that must remain in service during cold weather?
Review supports, movement, and physical damage
Pipe supports do more than hold up the line. They help maintain intended routing, clearance, and load distribution as the system operates. During the inspection, look for bent or damaged supports, missing hardware, corrosion, inadequate clearances, vibration wear, or piping that appears to be resting where it should not. Check areas near equipment connections, building penetrations, and valve stations, where movement and access demands can be greater.
